The ultimate dream of Bach scholars, performers, and admirers? That Johann Sebastian Bach’s already vast catalogue of more than a thousand works might still grow with a few additional masterpieces! Such opportunities are rare, but every now and then a true gem is unearthed. Thus, Bach researcher, keyboard specialist, and conductor Alexander Grychtolik succeeded in completing an unfinished Passion oratorio, turning it into a stage-ready jewel. The work, composed for Good Friday 1725, has survived only in fragments through other compositions, while Picander’s text has also been preserved: free and evocative poetry that highlights the personal suffering of Jesus, thereby following a striking trend of the Bach era.
